Exercise Can Reduce The Risk Of Dementia
May 11, 2023Physical activity helps improve cognitive function in several ways. Firstly, exercise increases the amount of oxygen reaching the brain which improves its ability to function optimally. Secondly, exercise encourages new nerve cells to develop in areas associated with memory and learning. This helps keep our brains healthy and functioning well over time as we age. Finally, exercise releases endorphins which improve mood and help reduce stress levels both known triggers for dementia symptoms.
A recent study from Finland showed that increasing moderate-intensity aerobic activity resulted in a 24% decrease in risk for any type of dementia.

this was especially true for those aged 70 or older who were at high risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia due to age-related factors such as diabetes or hypertension. Additionally, researchers believe that long-term participation in regular physical activity may even slow down progression once someone has begun showing signs of Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia.
There are many ways to incorporate physical activity into one’s lifestyle as an adult walking daily or joining a fitness class are just two examples but no matter how you decide to move your body each day, it is important not only for overall health but also reduces your chances of developing Alzheimer’s Disease or other types of dementias later on in life. Exercise is one way we can take control over our own aging process and ensure our brains remain healthy throughout life!
